I am very new to the Linux world and this is my first try at it. I cannot seem to install Linux on my HP. A819n. It seems to freeze during the initial stages of installation everytime. I have tried Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.06 & 6.1, Madriva one, All have the same problem.
Could this be due to windows being preloaded on my pc? Does anyone have any ideas?
The installation should go alright as long as there is enough room on your hard drive. I would say it may be a hardware problem. There are a lot of threads in the forums with this problem, just use search at the top of this page.
At what point does it freeze? Are there any error messages? Have you tried a text mode install, or passing options to the kernel such as 'acpi=off' or 'noapic'? A quick check on Google didn't turn up anything, but there are usually quite a lot of options available to try and get round hardware glitches, it's just a matter of finding them.
This is what happens when I try to install from boot disk:
I get to the initall screen, then I hit enter to begin the install. After about 15-20 seconds I get a bunch of code on my screen and it eventually stops at this at this line:
[17179658.372000] <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interupt
Okay, the exact source of the error is a little voodoo to me, but try adding the option 'noapic' to the boot options. On Ubuntu I believe this can be done by selecting "Misc options" on the boot screen (maybe by pressing F6?). It's probably possible for the other distros you've tried but you'd need to check their documentation to figure out exactly how to do it.
