Question Linux boot caught in loop

Hello,
I am new to Linux as well as this forum. Hope someone out there can help. Have using machine with Linux 10.2 as a file server for the past month or so. All has been working well until this past weekend.

In checking the machine this morning, there was a window with error message relating to an updater, I am assuming the OS tried to update sometime over the weekend. Machine was locked-up so I have attempted to reboot.

At reboot I come to a admin login screen that was never there before. I enter the admin username and password, they are accepted, but then the machine recycles back to the same log-in screen. Is there any simple way to fix this without a complete re-install of the OS. Any and all help would be tremendosuly appreciated. Thank you
