LightDM interferes with starting an X server on another virtual console

I've been using LightDM to get logged in and start up my X server and desktop for several years with no problems. But recently I began starting a second X server in a different virtual console by pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 and running startx with parameters for a different window manager.

If I put the path of the window manager executable directly on the command line, it usually works. But when I give it a script styled after .xinit or .xsession, it usually doesn't work. There may be a correlation between the delay from start of script to start of the window manager (i.e., how many X apps precede it in the script).

When it works, the Xorg log looks like this:
Code:
...
[227687.516] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.
[227687.516] (II) This device may have been added with another device file.
[227687.590] (II) RADEON(0): EDID vendor "DEL", prod id 16444
[227687.590] (II) RADEON(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync
...
When it fails, it looks like this. All lines above are identical in both cases.
Code:
...
[227588.851] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.
[227588.851] (II) This device may have been added with another device file.
[227588.867] (**) Option "fd" "24"
[227588.867] (II) event1 - Power Button: device removed
[227588.867] (**) Option "fd" "27"
[227588.867] (II) event0 - Sleep Button: device removed
[227588.867] (**) Option "fd" "28"
[227588.867] (II) event2 - Microsoft Microsoft 3-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM): device removed
...
Googling "Option fd 24" gets a lot of hits. Apparently the symptoms of a lot of bugs look the same.

But here's the kicker. When I disabled LightDM, the failures stopped! (systemd disable lightdm; systemd stop lightdm).

Is it likely that a display manager running on one virtual console would interfere with an X server starting up on another? Is it a bug, or design?

I wanted to ask if anyone knows the answer or has exprienced this, but I'm probably not going to pursue it because living without a DM has proven to not be a problem. Logging into the display manager takes the identical number of keystrokes as logging into virtual terminal. The only extra step is running my script that calls startx with the appropriate arguments.

Fedora 29, LightDM 1.28.0, IceWM 1.3.8 and cwm 6.3

I did have issues with lightdm and the Switch User feature a while back. Everytime I switch user to sign in with a different user's account, I would be taken to a blank screen. That was using the icon and Ctrl-Alt-Fn keys.
I ended up removing lightdm and start using lxdm on all my installations.

Well now I know the problem is not specific to LightDM. I experienced the identical problem on a system using xdm.

To heck with all DMs. I'm just going to use the text login and a script that calls startx from now on.

Running Fedora-Mate Rawhide with LightDM. Starting a second X session without an appropriate ~/.xinitrc file from a tty results in X aborting. However, with ~/.xinitrc in place, the command startx -- :1
works for me
