Kopete history plugin and file transfer
 

Hy,
I have a few questions i wasn't able to answer for myself:

1) Where does the kopete history plugin make it's saves, where can I find the files?
2) Has anyone managed to make the kopete file transfer work? Today i've tried to receive a file from a windows box using yahoo messenger 8.0 and after choosing the path to save the file to I received and error that kinda said that the user sending the file cancelled the transfer.

PS: Does pidgin support the above functions (i've never used).

The file transfer in kopete / pidgin routes the packet through microsoft server which makes the transmissions extremely slow.

Windows Messenger routes packets either through MS server or straight to the other client which makes the tranmissions faster.

That might be explaining why you get problems in file transfer.

However file transfer between 2 yahoo messenger clients on win boxes works however slow it might be... so this isn't really a realiable answer. Kopete file transfer simply crashes.

Ah, sorry... My mind was on MSN Messenger :(


Have you tried to start kopete from terminal? That way it should print out the error message to the terminal too which should help you troubleshoot the issue.

I've run kopete from terminal and when somebody with a win box tried to send me something I accepted and the error appeared once more.

Things happened instantaneously. Upon asking him what his client says, he replied: it appears we have initiated file transfer, but the progress bar remained empty.

Are you running iptables or some other firewall? It could be blocking the data transfer.

I am having a similar sort of problem with 0.12.6 under KDE 3.5.7 (72.6) under openSUSE 10.3.

I hadn't thought of running in console, I will try that and see if it is imformative.

What it looks like to me is that when you choose the folder to put the received file in (or even if you just take the default), Kopete attempts to replace the folder! rather than write the file in it.

I can send files, mostly to Windoze users, so I don't think it's a firewall issue.

But, what port(s) would Kopete need?

Surprised I don't get more google hits than this. Am I the only one?

Hi, I am also having the same issue of not being able to receive or send files in Kopete 0.12.3. My girlfriend also uses the same Kopete version and the same Debian etch. We both have hotmail email accounts, and we login with Kopete and chat, but when i send a file, my girlfriend sees the incoming file but tells me the progress bar never goes further than zero, which i also see from my side by the way. So, this problem is not only for Yahoo protocol, but for MSN protocol as well? The possibility remains that the problem is caused by Kopete itself?
Don't know how to solve this issue and although it is not critical, I would really love to see this thing working.

UPDATE: I decided to do a simple test. I send a file from one of my yahoo account to a second yahoo account (both users loged in from the same computer, same desktop KDE, so I have both kopete windows open for each user and indee i can send files back and forth from either user. So, corrrecting: Kopete has no problem with the Yahoo protocol. Then the problem to send files to my girlfriend in another city is perhaps the ISP has a firewall that blocks? Yet, my girlfriend does acknowledge the imminent arrival of the file but it never reaches her though. So it is still a mistery to me. Any ideas please? Thanks.

Im using the kopete fro kde4 and cannot send files at all, and it doesnt matter if the firewall is dissabled. I havent tried opening my router though.

One strange thing is that the kopete from kde3 works just fine with router and firewall, so why doesnt the kde4 kopete?

Seems like a bug in kopete that has been around since the start of kde4 and its still not fixed. Its a bit aggravating because there seems to be virtually no info about this on google. Am I one of the only few that try to send files to people I chat with?

So why does kopete kde3 work, and kopete kde4 not?

I believe there are a whole series of mysteries here. I have pretty much given up trying to use Kopete. It works on some routers (usually wireless) and not others. Oddly, it works on routers I administer, and not on those I don't. It would seem obvious from that that I have opened some port, but I haven't, I swear, since I don't know what Kopete needs/uses. As I say, above, I have gone over to just using Meebo.com in Firefox for chatting, since it gets out on port 80 just fine.

I do know this is not a (localhost) firewall issue, since turning off the f/w has no effect ( and besides, is on when it does work!)

Like the others posting to this thread, I find it odd that there is not more about this on the web..
