Kmail rejects username/password.

GNU/linux kernel 2.6
Slackware 12.0
KDE release 3.5.7
Kmail 1.0.7

I am having a problem with Kmail. When I run it, first thing it does is to display a dialog box asking for username and password. I type both, hit <Enter> and I set to work with my mail. But, after some 60s, the dialog box appears again, asking me for username and password. And so on and so on.

In this way, I am unable to use Kmail whereas, up to two months ago, it ran perfectly well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

P.S.: maybe I should have began by asking if anybody uses Kmail.
