KDE4 lost menu bar
Not sure whats going on here. Might just be a graphics issue but I was adding a superkaramba widget to my KDE4 desktop and in the middle of everything the screen went grey. The mouse was still working but everything else was gone.
I alt-ctrl-del to reboot, the graphical login screen comes up fine. I log on and the default wallpaper comes up (not the one I had changed to prior to the crash); the little 'add a widget' footprint thingy in the upper right hand corner comes up. The two docs I had saved to my desktop are there. But that's it. No kicker panel, no access to the apps or anything. Right mouse click gives me access to the usual so I can log-off. I've tried restart, off and on, log-off and on, etc. but no change. When I log in under KDE3 ... it's fine. So I'm not dead in the water. Anyone have any ideas or know of any bugs in Launchpad that might deal with this? Thanks. |
It's happened to me, and I never did find a solution.
A "work-around" is to add an "application launcher" to your desktop and use it. Theoretically you can drag the "widget" to your task-bar (another "widget," of course) and dock it there, and, again, theoretically, you can attach a task-bar "widget" to the side of your screen. (The "theoretically" is quoted because, in practice, in KDE4, the "dock" and "attach" functionality seems to work, at best, sporadically. Also theoretically, alles besser in 4.1, but Fedora and Kubuntu have not yet put 4.1 into their updates repositories so I'm only working from reports. |
If I can get something up beyond what I described, I will take your advise. Actually, I was in the middle of attempting to drag the widget when the whole thing went ka-blooey.
Any idea how I can restore functionality in 4.0? Should I play around with kcontrol or kdesktop? Until then I'm sticking with KDE 3.5 and waiting for 4.1 to show up on the Kubuntu repositories. Thanks |

That does work.... should have thought of that myself. Thanks. Going to try to upgrade to 4.1 now. Lets see how that goes.

A Fix!
Alright, so i get that the version of KDE 4 that I've been running on my Driva 08 box isn't final.
Anyway, I got my task menu back. Same flaky thing happened to me as to you guys. Log in under a different WM and delete the .kde4 directory under your home directory. Then log in under kde4 again. ~Doloj |
You can always use kicker:
