I've been a slacker for 3 years and used kde for max 2 months and I guess I am not unique in that.

Knightron 12-09-2011 07:41 PM

Just voted kde. I think it's slightly unfare because i'm sure there's many people that liked gnome 2, or kde 3 but are unaware of mate and to a lesser extent because it's been around longer trinnity. I'm actually using twm at the moment and it's not all bad, but i need to get a file manager though. I haven't tried near the amount of the de/wm in the list as i'd like, but i can say that if kde wasn't around i defiantly move to either xfce or trinnity.

There are like I liked gnome 2. That caused a lot of people (linus) to switch when gnome 3 came out. And KDE 3 was well liked (didn't use linux before kde 4) and when kde 4 came out it caused a lot more people to switch (linus). But not a lot of distros support KDE3 and it's getting to gnome 2 as well which is why I didn't include them

I Vote KDE. I use to like Gnome 2 Better (that's why I use Centos 6) and I am not at all fond of Gnome 3. I use KDE on PC-BSD and Pardus. LXDE is good but a bit Buggy. I use Awesome-wm on an Ubuntu Virtual Machine for research (since it's written in Lua and I am learning Lua).

.. Um What? but you did include them, they're in the list. No one has voted for them though because most people i'd imagine, dont generally refer to them as mate or trinnity, but gnome2 or kde3.

As a side note, previously saying oi'm a kde fan, i've recently completely ditched Amarok, i think the interface is to damn annoying and have permanently switched to Clmentine, which is a fork from the old Amarok 1.4. I am finding Clementine very pleasing, exactly what i want. Once i save up some dollar, i'm going to send some to the developers.

Technically there forks of them. And are still actively developed and used in Linux Distros. I think linux mint will use MATE and you can get Kubantu standard with Trinity.

Mr. Bill 12-10-2011 07:21 PM

LXDE is my 1st choice. Lightweight but still functional and configurable. Gnome 2 still runs a close second... for as long as it's still supported, that is...

Agreed.

Another problem I always had was losing permission to use my optical drives and sound card. :banghead:

Xfce - Gnome 2 but in the Stone Age.

With the other lesser know Desktop Environments you have to rub two sticks together to achieve basic usage with them. I don't have the time to "go camping" all that much.

Sad but true...

custangro 12-10-2011 08:45 PM

I used to be a "Gnome Man" but I've find that LXDE with SLiM works the best for me :)

Trinity doesn't even have any rpm packages for distros, so i believe there should be a clear comma in your sentence between 'developed' and, 'and' to avoid potential confusion to someone who doesn't know better, whom might assume that trinity is also 'actively used in Linux Distros'. As for Mate, it's not widely used either. Linux Mint and Arch seem to be the only ones that have packages for it. Arches are hosted on a users server with limited bandwidth, (and one seemed to be down mind you) and I'm sure Linux Mint is only doing it to try and score more popularity points from the Ubuntu users who dislike Unity. Does Mate even have a websight? i couldn't find it.

Did you even look at their website? They offer binary packages for Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora and Slackware currently and they are working on packages for openSuse and Mandriva.

asipper 12-11-2011 06:31 AM

Kightron According to distro watch mint is the most popular. It would seem that dev would target more popular distros until their more popular.

asipper 12-11-2011 06:33 AM

oh and Mate's Website (it's not in english) http://matsusoft.com.ar/projects/mate/

My apologies, i did actually go to the websight, but i must have somehow overlooked that.

I'm pretty sure the devs just make the packages and it's up to the devs of the distros on weather they make builds of the packages for there distribution.
Thanks for the link.

KDE does seem to be the favorite so far. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that KDE is favored by more LQ users than any other DE or WM.

What is surprising to me though is the poor showing by GNOME relative to all other choices. I mean, it doesn't even say GNOME 3, it just says GNOME. Even if KDE weren't an option in the poll, GNOME is still getting trounced by the competition.
  • More than twice as many respondents favor Xfce over GNOME.
  • More than twice as many respondents favor Fluxbox over GNOME.
  • GNOME ties with LXDE and OpenBox.

What can be made of this? Is it that LQ users tend to favor lightweight desktops or simple window managers over full featured DEs (again, KDE aside)? Is it that people are leaving GNOME? I really don't know.

Nothing too serious I guess: it is only an open poll of a single community.
