As a poster said LQ is populated a lot by Slackware Users. In a poll a couple years ago in the Slackware section XFCE was 2nd Fluxbox 3rd and KDE first.

I've only just started using trinty, and I'm not sure if it will kick Xfce from its current 'installed on all my not so fast machines' position.

I love KDE. And, well, I swear that I use KDE4 in my job everyday, not KDE3!

I abandoned Kde some years ago for Gnome. I'm so used to gnome there is no going back. Everything I need works and I know the software.
I still dabble with other window managers for fun but they are always lacking something I need or take too long to configure the way I want them.
I have hope for lxde.

I'm surprised none of the many denunciations of Gnome 3 seems to mention .config/dconf. A binary configuration file! Whatever happened to the Unix principle that all configuration files should be text?

I was testing Fedora 16 recently and I altered the default desktop font with the new configuration tool. Unfortunately, I mis-spelled the name of the one I wanted. The program accepted it and all my text turned to boxes. I couldn't correct the problem from within Gnome, because I couldn't see what I was doing, and I couldn't do it from a virtual terminal because I had no way of accessing dconf. I just had to delete the file (with all the configuration done so far) and reboot so that it could be rebuilt. Not on my computer they don't!

I would agree that binary configuration files are generally pointless and counterproductive. Might it have saved you to backup the file before committing any changes?

so I'm guessing that's gnome2 you're referring to? Do you use gnome3? And which did you vote for?

A few days ago I upgraded my Slackware 13.37 to -current and installed KDE 4.7.4 (just to try it out). Having used i3 for a year, I must say that although I'm sure KDE is a fine DE, for me it's not functional (especially on a dual head monitor setup). I'm so much more efficient using i3 tiling window manager.

You might have been better off installing Alien Bob's KDE 4.6.5 packages on 13.37 rather than upgrading to -current. For me that was flawless.

I like KDE of fedara 13 and 15 but gnome is the way to the future.
KDE is good if you are fixing for is not heavy.

I've become torn. I said i'd switch to xfce if kde wasn't around in my first post, and i voted for kde, but i've changed my mind. I had an ubnutu 10.10 vm running in debian, and i found i was using it more and more because i enjoyed the de. It's official, i've installed gnome on Debian and i'm now a gnome/mate guy, i just think it's so finished. i don't know how to explain what i feel; but to me, the things that should be there are. I think that i should mention that gnome2 was the first de i used on Gnu/Linux and i've swiched in the following order for different ammounts of time; gnome, kde, gnome, xfce, fluxbox, xfce, kde, twm, kde, gnome. I have tested Trinnity and some others, but i would't say i used them. Kde is easily the one i've used the most of all the de i've used, closley followed by xfce. It really tears me now that i've found i really enjoy gnome2 since it's now ended, and also because Slackware officially doesn't support it. Oh well, i guess i'll be one of the guys that hang on to what they've got like the old kde 3.5 guys. The hardest part is that i use Slackware which doesn't cover gnome, so other people have to provide gnome for the few that want it, but now even they may just go gnome3, and that is not for me. So if i can, i think i'll change my vote to mate.
