KDE (system) notifications not working (KDE 3.5.8)(Debian:Testing Branch))
My KDE system notification functionality seems to not be working at all, anymore.

I am running Debian Lenny (testing).
KDE 3.5.8

I've got the same lack of functionality on two different machines.

Since the most common type of system notification is a system sound, my initial thoughts were that it was an ARTS problem.

This is not the case.

I've set some events to display a message when they occur, and the message never occurred. I suspect that it is the notification subsystem that gone amok, and not the audio.

This has happened sometime between Wednesday 26 March and Friday 28 March 2008. Since then, I have been performing regular daily upgrades on both machines as they become available in the Debian Testing Branch repositories.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I need to repeat that I am 99% certain that the problem has nothing to do with ARTS or audio.

Solved... but not how I wanted it solved
After trying trying suggested solutions that I had found in earlier posts on, and some other internet sources, I decided on a less than optimal course of action.

I installed version 3.5.9 from the Debian Unstable repository.
Notifications work OK now, but I would have rather been able to puzzle this out and actually solve the problem rather than just upgrading to 3.5.9

I'm still curious to know what the problem was, though....

I've got a thread at about this too. I tried all the searched for audio fixes, checking and re-doing the ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc, aptitude reinstalling all the akode, kde xine, arts related things, upgrading (and then downgrading again when it didn't work) the kde arts things, setting external players, etc. Players can play the sound files and the arts system is working too as the sound test works (but not the notification sound things).

So it works with the KDE 3.5.9 stuff, eh? Probably innotify, but who knows since you just upgraded everything.

Hmm. I just aptitude search inotify and none of what appeared is installed. When you do aptitude search inotify after you have installed all of kde 3.5.9, do some of those inotify packages listed there show they are installed? Just wondering.

I don't recall seeing any inotify stuff being removed along with the upgrades in the last few days and the KDE notification sounds were working until then. Maybe KDE just handles that internally with its own packages?

Whatever it is, I'm in the same boat. The Gnome sounds with the es alsa plugins installed work fine by the way. This is just a KDE thing broken a couple of days ago.

Funny, I have a series of questions I posted over there that have not gotten a single reply the last few days. Strike that, one fellow did reply to this issue relating that he experienced it too. Weird. Questions like, "I installed Debian, now what do I do?" get lots of long helpful hints but specific problems with good information get ignored. I don't get it. Isn't it supposed to be the opposite?

Eventually Lenny will get KDE 3.5.9, but I recall it was months of waiting when 3.5.8 came out so I do hope a fix for 3.5.8 comes in first.

Edit -

Ah! It is a bug in the arts stuff. Solved in KDE 3.5.9 updates to the 2 arts things involved. So Lenny folks can grab the older debs, install KDE 3.5.9 from Sid, or wait a bit and we'll get 3.5.9 goodness automatically with the upgrades.
