KDE not shutdown with screen or konsole running

Ever since installed Kubuntu 12.10, I have had an unusual problem. I tell KDE to shutdown, but if I have a konsole window open where I have started a screen session, it will not shutdown. It will simply allow me to log-out and force me to log back in, then resume the screen-session and log out of that, ONLY THEN will it allow me to gracefully shutdown.

I think I have also observed this problem when I simply have a konsole/terminal open occasionally.

KDE should be shutting down processes when I click shutdown. How can I make it behave properly and get around this obvious bug?

I'm running KDE version 4.9.3.

Try issuing the halt or shutdown command from a terminal. eg. shutdown now
