KDE menu bar: icons all on the left. How to rectify and documentation of menu bar?

It's driving me nuts. I can't get the icons where I want them (all are on the left side), I can't sort them by hand, the little icons of running programs are gone, spacers get the old separation between right and left back (but are ugly) and can't be arranged by mouse ...

I'm doing things the wrong way but obviously my intuition works differently from that of the KDE makers. Anybody with an easy explanation or a pointer where I can read up on this? I couldn't even activate a help screen, this can't be my day :(.

Let's do one thing at a time.

"the little icons of running programs are gone" - this is "System Tray". Let's see if it's running first - unlock widgets, click on the 'kidney' on the panel, click 'Add Widgets', click 'Categories', select 'Running'. Is 'System Tray' there?

Yes, system tray is there. I accidentally clicked on it and got a crash of the plasma workspace(?) -- which didn't hurt anything. I'm just downloading necessary files to enable but-reporting

Are you using 4.7? I had similar crashes around 4.5 time but 4.7 does not give me any issues.

Might be a good idea to delete that panel completely, add a clean new one and stick widgets on it one by one.

Yes, it is 4.7 (comes with openSuSE 12.1). I don't really dare to delete it, for one thing I obviously don't know how to really handle it, for the other thing I think that one should be able to do what one (I) want to achieve, so this would be sort of a capitulation. I'll do it when I have no other choice.

Do you know of any resource where to read up on it?

Okay. After all this time I did dare it. I deleted that panel. I had previously found out how to recreate the task bar (this is not quite straight-forward, as the German and the English denominations of panel, task bar, control panel etc. are not used in a coherent manner).

Anyhow. I created a default panel with most of the buttons already there and filled in the rest. All is well. Thank you for that easy suggestion, klearview :).
