KDE having problems saving settings

I recently decided to try out KDE on my slack 11 based desktop. I have it running fairly well, but have encountered a very annoying problem: it seems to have trouble saving certain settings. It seems that Kopete is unable to remember passwords for IM accounts and wallets can't be saved between sessions. Also, Kmail can't keep my email account information for more than a few minutes. I can't tell for sure, but it seems to me like these things could be related.

I get the feeling that I'm missing a dependency but KDE isn't giving me any indication that anything is wrong (error dialogs, etc.) and I'm so new to the environment I have no idea where to start looking.

Slackware 11,, KDE 3.5.4. My home dir is on my server and mounts directly to /home/zytsef using smbmount, but it seems to be working fine and I doubt it has much to do with it; all partitions have plenty of space free. Any starting points for troubleshooting are appreciated.
