KDE Desktop didn't start correctly
I'm a fairly newbe. So please keep it fairly simple.
First I'm running SUsE 42.2 Leap with the KDE desktop. When I first installed the system everything worked great. I set the desktop background, installed most packages, put a few widgets on the desktop. Now when I start the system I get a black background, the windows do not have a title bar, of course no widgets. I can't resize windows. I can shift focus to the window below the top but can't bring it on top. I can use the system but with difficulty. Any help would be appreciated to restart PLASMA(?) or otherwise get it running correctly. Jim |
I found how to quit and restart the plasmadesktop however that gets me back to a black screen (with the system tray and bar) the launcher icon is also messed up. I'm getting the idea that this has something with dbus.

This sounds like a kwin issue at first blush. Can you do Alt+F2 to bring up the run window and run kwin through that, and does it change anything?
|
kwin could well be the problem but when I entered kwin in the Alt+F2 run window I first got a KWrite window with lots of numbers and when I entered it again I got a drop down list. When I entered in in a Konsole window I got:
If 'kwin' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this: cnf kwin jim@linix-8j1x:~> cnf kwin The program 'kwin' can be found in the following package: * kwin [ path: /usr/bin/kwin, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ] Try installing with: sudo zypper install kwin So do I install it? |
Yeah, unless you're specifically trying to use something else as the window manager.
|
This is a standard SUsE Leap 42.2 installation with KDE desktop install. So take it from there.

After running kwin there is some improvement. Windows now have a title bar, apps show up in the task manager bar, application menus now work. However no widgets appear, when right clicking on the desktop (blank) nothing happens, can't change the desktop background, not sure what else work or doesn't. Thanks for the help.
