KDE 4.3 and compositing problem
hello!
I am running debian testing with KDE 4.3 on a 64-bit laptop with nvidia 9600gt graphics card. yesterday compositing just stopped working and i no longer have any desktop effects! i don t know what caused it but I think there are 2 possibilities. 1. updates and 2. I connected an external monitor and used the nvidia x server settings program to configure it. the nvidia drivers are from their website and not from the repos. when i click on resume compositing i just get a message that it has been suspended by another application. any ideas? thank you, jack |
I see a number of messages saying 'Compositing was too slow and has been suspended' so that is a possibility, too. There is some kind of function key combination that turns it back on (alt-F12, or something), but I am afraid I've never taken much notice, as I've just let it suspend compositing.
|
I have tried that key combination and still nothing. weird! compositing is not willing to work! maybe i have to edit my xorg.conf to add compositing but i am not sure that it will do the trick. the error is that it is suspended by another application not that it is not there.

bump as problem still exists even after some kde updates!
|
You mentioned configuring an external monitor. This is likely the cause, compositing may not be supported when using multiple monitors.
|
well, at first it was working just fine! for the first 2 or 3 days i mean. then it just stopped working. now compositing is disabled even when i do not use the external monitor.
|
By updating my ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and changing under compositing the value of "Enabled" to true, and then running "kwin --replace &" re-enabled compositing but now it is toooooo slow. any ideas now?

I am having the same problem. I have started a nubber of threads and gotten no useful help.
I reinstalled kubuntu and the brand new install did it imediatly. I installed fedora with KDE and it worked great for a few days and now has started doing it. I have searched a lot on the internet and have found may people with the same problem but no solution. |

I had been noticing the same issue with compositing. The live distro worked very well but post install was fairly drab. Now I am using 10.04 Kubuntu and my search started here, without success I might add but I pressed on.
This lead me to the following link. A simple 3 step how to for Compositing. I hope this works for you. Linux is really quite beautiful Hesperant Ieger |

I know this is a old thread but I figured this should be answered.
It turns out that this is a issue with Nvidia drivers and the way they are patched against the kernel. I know that this issue still exists in the x86-260.19.36 versions as well. Quote:
