KDE 3.5 KIOSK [Action Restrictions] not applying to profile

Hi

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 3.5 and the kiosktool to create a locked down public kiosk that will only run konqueror which will be restricted to a single website. This should be straight forward, according to everything I have read.(hmm) however I have been unable to get the [KDE Action Restrictions] to apply to my kde-profile.

Kiosktool creates a a number of files (including kdeglobals) that are stored at /etc/kde-profiles/myprofile/share/config. In this kdeglobals file is placed the [KDE Action Restrictions] group which contains the specific action keys which are disabled.

In my case I have only applied a single action restriction, as a simplified test.

[KDE Action Restrictions][$i]
action/file_save_as=false

However this restriction is not applied to konqueror when it is run from the supposedly restricted desktop. And I have no idea why!.

Obviously I used kiosktool to create the profile in the first place, to define the restriction and to assign the user to the profile. All of this seemed quite straight forward, in theory.

I have spent many many hours hunting around to find the source of this problem and in doing so have become quite familiar with the config file structure in KDE, but I am unable to lock down the menus. I have had success locking down the [URL Restrictions] and since they reside in the same kdeglobals file, this tells me that the file is at least being read at some point..just not applying the action restrictions.

As to why, then I am lost and hope that some wiser mind than mine might be able to share the wisdom..

I suggest using GNOME.

I had problems with the KDE Kiosk Tool also, but using Pessulus and GNOME works very well and is very straight forward.

The default GNOME web browser, epiphany, can be locked down into kiosk mode, though I think you might have to configure a firewall to prevent users from browsing different sites.

This is the first time I ever heard of a Gnome kiosk mode!!. Originally, bout a month ago, my first ever foray into linux was to install ubuntu 8.10, but then I learned that the KDE desktop had this magical tool called the 'kiosk admin tool' that would allow me to configure/lockdown my desktop, browser and all. So I installed kubuntu instead. I read and read varios posts on google, but cant seem to get some lock down features things to work as I imagine they should. Maybe ill just change back to gnome. Thanks
