K/Ubuntu 8.10+nvidia driver and chip+some app's screen redraw very slow

Ok, so normally I have no problems, but recently some of my app's have shown very slow redrawing on the screen.

For instance, gnubg. When the checker is moved there's about a 2 second gap between selecting the checker and the screen redraw showing where it's been moved to.

also things like using the drop down menus in firefox, about a second until the menu appears and then 2 seconds + until it shows the submenu contents.

I'm guessing it's probably some sort of settings issue, but for the life of me I haven't got a clue where to start looking.

I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of, and haven't installed anything that might be a problem (again, that I'm aware of).

My system is reasonably new (less than 6 months), with a Core 2 quad chip and accompanying nvidia graphics card (not sure how to get exact details) and it's using the 180.11 nvidia driver. I have ubuntu 8.10 installed but use KDE 4 for my desktop.

Any guidance/assistance etc is very much appreciated.

regards

John

Ok, so I'm still stuck as to what's going on. It must be something to do with the specific applications (and maybe my system), because if I just play Kpatience, the animations of the moving cards seems to work fine, plus I installed supertux and fired it up and that also seems to play fine.

Hence I'm even more confused how to work out whats actually going on, whether there's anything I can do to stop this annoyance etc.

regards

John
