John the ripper cannot find its .conf file

I need help in configuring John the Ripper to be able to run from anywhere on the system. I am running Fedora Core 6 x86. The files are placed in /etc/, the executable in /bin/, the docs in /usr/share/john*****/, and the application files in /usr/share/john/

The problem is that whenever John The Ripper is run in the same directory that a copy of the john.conf file is it runs, but if I cd up to / then it gives me an error that it cannot find the john.conf file.

Really appreciate all the help.
