Install Windows XP
 

I am running suse linux 10.1, gnome, i have only 1 hard drive, now I want to install Windows XP on my computer.
So i started by using partitioner in YaST to see if i can create a new partition for Windows installation, but it says my last partition \dev\sda3 is mounted to \home, so i have unmount it first. but umount \home didn't work and it gave me an error "device is busy"

so, what is the way to install a windows os in my linux computer?

some information:

the reason i want to install a windows is for gaming purpose. thanks for any help!

Personally, I would download the Gparted Live CD and use it. I usually do all my partitioning offline, that way nothing is mounted.

few things.

1. install XP FIRST then install Linux
2. when installing XP, create a set of partitions something like the following:

c: = 10G
d: = XG (X being how ever big you want for the applications, swap (page file in windows), games, etc... for NTFS)
depending on the XP CD you have (if it is a SP2 then you have ONLY NTFS as an option, if it is older SP1 or NO SP, then you will also have FAT32) create a FAT32 partition.

3. format ONLY C: and install XP to C:
4. once XP is up and patched, format D: with quick format using NTFS and the last partition FAT32 if that is an option, if not, then just leave it UNFORMATTED.
5. install Linux and when you get to the point of picking the partitions, use fdisk and just do not touch the NTFS partitions and leave them alone.

Microsoft is greedy as h3ll, this can not be debated, and part of that greed is to make there installer OVERWRITE any and ALL MBR partitions and thus screwing up what you have in there from Grub or LiLo.

so no way to install a windows after linux is installed?

Of coure you can.
Do the resizing ahead of time as suggested by pljvaldez. Windoze merely requires a primary partition.
After the install, the MBR will have been overlaid, and you will no longer have access to Linux. Generally easy enough to rectify, although with Suse who knows.

yes you can install XP after Linux, it is just more of a PITA then doing it the other way around.

get a "hiren's boot cd" or similar.boot from cd and edit there the partitions(size,type,etc).set the windows partition as activ,so u ll boot into win after first 1/2 of intallation to complete it.after fully installing win,set partition with linux back to active,so when u ll boot,u ll have a choise(lin/win) to load
