inputting keyboard actions a mouse movements from software to an X server

is there a way to programmaticly provide input to X (as opposed to a specific window) controlling the mouse and keyboard to fake the input other than running Xvnc an making my software pretend to be a VNC client? i want to do this on an already running instance of X server.
