Initial start of ethernet connection for Ubuntu 10.04
 

I just downloaded the Ubuntu distro 10.04 and am using a Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and am trying to setup for internet but only see loopback, as is normal for initial setup I suppose.

How do I start/setup my broadband connection for internet use ?

why did you download a 2 year old distro? Scrap it and get 12.04 instead. No point starting off out of date.

Fundamentally you should only need to plug in the network cable and off you go, this would certainly be nothing to do with the cable router side of things, more aroudn the nic on your own machine if there's any issue there. Where are you seeing the loopback only? eth0 *should* be listed in an ifconfig output even when not connected really, as the modules would be loaded and NetworkManager would be ready to run DHCP on that interface when a link is found. what does "ifconfig -a" show about all the known interfaces? what NIC is it?
