If I type 'xinit' alone to start X, I just get a blank screen and can't exit

Hi.

I can start X using 'startx', however, I want to learn more about X and how it works, etc, so I was folling around with some commands to start it. I 'man xinit' it says that you can just type 'xinit' and t will start X on screen 0 with and xterm open, but after typing 'xinit' alone on my computer, I merely get a blank screen with no apparent way to exit save a reboot. What am I doing wrong? And, yes, I know that I can just use 'startx', but I'm learning below the blackbox.

Thank you

SOLVED!! I was running 'xinit' as root (AAAGHHHH, not good!). Now if I run it as normal user I get the expected black screen with mouse pointer and white xterm in position +0+0. Now I have to start a windowmanager to actually get out of this (LOL), or ctrl-alt-backspace.

The fun and excitement of the basics! )
