how do i set up my wireless connection as i am new to Ubuntu. by the when i try to download anything i get an error from archive manager.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

In the top right hand corner of your desktop there should be a network manager. If you click on it, a list of available networks should unfold. Is this the case?

If not, if you can open a terminal window (command line interface) and post the output of the 'iwconfig' command?

yep, try above. Getting wireless card working can be pretty tough task for a linux newbie.
