How to enable power menu without gnome-session (ubuntu 11.10)

For two reasons I prefer to run my own custom xsession: I need to setup the environment in .bash_profile and start programs in .xsession (not run by gnome-session) and I prefer to use fvwm window manager (to move titlebar to side and save vertical pixels).

However, when running gnome-panel (+ gnome-settings-daemon) on the new ubuntu, I do not get the new power menu (My menu is there but no suspend/hibernate/shutdown is available there).

Is there a way to get the power menu by running other daemons/applets?

Is there a way to tell gnome-session to run .bash_profile and use a custom window manager?
