How get Aplications menu in Gnome?

Just started Gnome which I'm not used to. A panel comes out of the left hand side of the screen when the mouse pointer is moved to the left hand side.

But there is no 'applications' thing on it. Got applications once by accident but have been unable to reproduce this.

So can't really start programs.

How start applications, say a terminal?

Sorry just worked out how to do it: make a new panel thing and put a 'start button' on it.
