How do I Uninstall one Desktop and set up another

I'd like to try out a few of the distributions before I decide to settle on one. However, I can't figure out how to uninstall one and install another. How is that done?

At present I have LinuxXP.

To install another distro just pop in that distro's cdrom and format the disk it should get rid of the other one.

I tried that. It doesn't seem to do that. It just doesn't do anything.

It should do something since formatting destroys the data for the previous installation. What you need to do is select your old Linux partitions as the target for insttallation and make sure you select the option to format at least the root (/) partition.
