How do I set up a remote desktop in Ubuntu 10.04?
 

I would like to set up a desktop computer, running Ubuntu 10.04 as a remote desktop so that I can access and use Linux on my laptop which is a windows machine. I am mainly doing this as a learning experience. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I'd very strongly suggest you install nx (from nomachine.org), it's great, and there's a free version for 1 or 2 connections.

Thanks, but I have to watch my downloads carefully to keep data overage usage charges from occurring. Is there a way to do it without a download?

depends what you already have downloaded, vnc is often included in many installation media sets. But vnc is awful. nx is not big. How awful could an ISP in Maryland be??

The only thing that I have is the Terminal Server Client and that appears to be only for connecting to other machines, not putting my own machine out there. We have AT&T as our ISP; we currently have a MIFI Hot spot.....it isn't too bad, but we do go over almost every month.

I tried downloading nx, and it wouldn't install on my system, a dependency problem. However, I now know what program to use, so I may be able to set it up on a different computer or with a different operating system. OOPs, I just realized why it didn't install....I need to download the client and node packages as well. I think I'll wait to download them on a public network though.

Hasn't 10.04, or isn't it about to, reach EOL and no longer be supported? I realise this is a learning experience but wouldn't you prefer to be learning on something that is at least supported?

10.04 is a long term support release. It's got 2 years life left in it yet - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS

But all LTS releases from 6.06 to (and including) 10.04 were only 3 years on the desktop and 5 for a server. If he is setting up a desktop he will be using something that is no longer supported.
