hiding files on Desktop

Hi,

I am using Fedora Core 8 for last few days.
My problem is :

When I create any file in my home directory, it's icon is getting displayed on the Desktop.

How do I avoid from showing up of icons for all the files in my home directory on Desktop?

This was not happening on FC5 which I was using before this.

Regards,
Girish

Or better still, can I choose to only appear icons on my Desktop for specific file types only (e.g. excel spreadsheets, image files etc.)?

This was not happening on FC5 which I was using before this.

Put your documents in the Documents directory instead of the Desktop directory.
