Unhappy Help me to solve this problem

Dear Sir,

My name is Kishor, writting from P.E.S. College of Engineering, Mandya. I am going to ask douts regarding installing of NCTUNS-6.0 (Networking simulation software) on FEDORA-12 Linux.

I have tried to install the same software on FEDORA-12 in ACER computer. Installation of Fedora-12 is complected successfully on ACER computer but installation of NCTUNS-6.0 on the same machine gives some error.

Installation of NCTUNS-6.0 is complected. That is it creates another Kernal called NCTUNS. After reboot the machine we boot from this new kernal NCTUNS. While booting it shows error and it does not enter into NCTUNS screen and hangs. The error is as folows:

"Could not update ICEauthority file /home/nctuns/.ICTauthority."

After clicking Close button it give another error as :

"There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)"

After clicking Close button it give another error as :

"Nautills could not create the following
required folders : /home/nctuns/Desktop, /home/nctuns/.nautillus.
Before running nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that nautilus can create them"

After this the system get hangs. This problem occurs only in ACER computer and there is no problem in HP computers.

Sir, I request you, please try to solve this problem. Please help me to solve. What steps that shall I can take to solve this problem? Because this software is most important to the students.

I have been waiting for your responce. Please give answer Sir.

Thanking you.

First, there are not just "sirs" on here, and this isn't urgent for anyone here. We volunteer our time to answer questions, so asking us to hurry up and answer you isn't nice.

A first suggestion is, why are you using Fedora 12?? The latest is FC15, with FC16 coming out soon. Having the latest versions of things is a good idea, since some of your problems may have been solved by the updates/fixes that have been applied since. That having been said, I would check the permissions on the /home/nctuns directory. You don't say how you installed FC12 on all your computers, or how you created the users/installed software, but at first glance, it seems like a permissions problem. If you're logging in as user nctuns, and the home directory is owned by root, you won't have permissions to create ANY files/directories, and you'll see problems.

Do an "ls -l /home", and look at the permissions on the /home/nctuns directory, and who owns it. A 'regular' user on my system has permissions of 755, and is owned by the user, and group ownership is 'users'. For example:
Code:
drwxr-xr-x 93 userid users 12288 Sep 26 10:31 userid
This says that the directory is read/write/execute for the owner (userid in this case). If it's owned by root, I wouldn't be able to write into my own home directory. Change this with "chown nctuns /home/nctuns" (run that command as root), and try to log in again.
