google earth won't run

i was all excited when i found out they made a linux port of google earth so i went out and downloaded it. the install comes in a .bin file so i ran(as root) "sh GoogleEarth_install.bin"(or whatever the filename was) and installed it to /usr/local. it installed great, but when i try to run it, it just sits at the "initializing" splash-screen with the google earth logo. can anybody help me with this?

Don't quote me on this, but I beleive you need an internet connection up and running.

twelvenine 09-13-2006 08:17 PM

i do have an active internet connection, thats how i downloaded google earth.

kstan 09-14-2006 07:10 AM

try run it as root user?

twelvenine 09-14-2006 09:52 AM

it doesn't work as root either. is there any way i can get it to give me some output in console? like a -v option or something?

kstan 09-14-2006 07:23 PM

your ati or nvidia card work probably?

twelvenine 09-15-2006 07:38 PM

i have an onboard intel video chipset and it's configured/works.

borchen 09-23-2006 04:22 AM

I have exactly the same problem

My system has an ATI X800XL which has 3D support running properly.

Output of fglrxinfo:

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XL Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8)

There are NO errors whatsoever when I start Google Earth from the commandline.

I already tried the "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.10" thing, but that only causes the following error:

./googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libm.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

My kernel-version = 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5

Lucky for me, Google Earth is in the Portage tree. The version is 4.0.1693 (beta).

Make sure you do not have the firewall blocking outgoing and incomming requests. Also I think you need a broadband connection to download the data.

Intel graphics is partially supported and slow. What I read, 3D only works in 16-bit color mode.

borchen, you need the required libraries to be installed. If they are installed, setting up a symbolic could be used to work around the problem.

Does your system meet the recomended specs?

Runs just fine for me.

I have it running quite will with Intel865 onboard graphics and Xorg driver. I think you need a recent kernel and the i915 kernel module for the intel graphics. Here's a (Debian specific) guide to other stuff you might need:

http://www.larsen-b.com/Article/231.html

Check the log files in /var/log. Especially any that change when you try to start GE. Also look through /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if the graphics has initialised correctly.

Also you could see if GE has put anything in its .googleearth config/cache directory that might give a clue.

I had the same problem installing Suse 10.1 Pro on an AMD64x2 XPLIO machine and thought it was an ATI Radeon on motherboard graphics card problem. That card gave me frequent white screens even with the proprietary driver. I thus bought an NVIDIA 7300 and overrode the ATI onboard card but had the same problem. Ouch. I checked and shut down the firewall and still had the same problem. I therefore decided to reinstall Suse 10.1 but this time without installing the firewall and voila Googleearth finally worked and went beyond the "initializing" stage. Odd that I have a Suse 9.2 AMD64 machine and had no problem with the firewall installed. The iptables rules must have changed to block Googleearth initializing. I am behind a firewall of another computer so I am not overly concerned with having no firewall on the new computer. Give it a shot without the firewall and see if it works but not for too long in an unprotected state. I would like to know what the changes in the firewall rules were, if at all, from 9.2 to 10.1.

You have an internet connection over some mind of proxy server?

Since google earth doesn't know about that, it might take a lot of time, until it finally gets a timeout.

Though I have a router between the computer in question and the internet there is no proxy server involved. I am directly connected via Shaw Cable. There was something wrong with the Suse 10.1 install as the other 5 computers all worked fine. The problem was that there was no message from Google to help debug what it was trying to do. Initializing didn't cut it. There were some dmesg messages coming from the firewall so I did another install without the firewall running and voila it worked. Oddly that I did shut down the firewall first but this didn't seem to work. There was likely something still there blocking GoogleEarth from connecting to the server. Still puzzles me how the firewall works but I will try to compare the rules of the new Suse10.1 with my 9.2 and see if there is anything significant that pops up.
