google earth won't run
i was all excited when i found out they made a linux port of google earth so i went out and downloaded it. the install comes in a .bin file so i ran(as root) "sh GoogleEarth_install.bin"(or whatever the filename was) and installed it to /usr/local. it installed great, but when i try to run it, it just sits at the "initializing" splash-screen with the google earth logo. can anybody help me with this?

Don't quote me on this, but I beleive you need an internet connection up and running.
|
i do have an active internet connection, thats how i downloaded google earth.
|
try run it as root user?
|
it doesn't work as root either. is there any way i can get it to give me some output in console? like a -v option or something?
|
your ati or nvidia card work probably?
|
i have an onboard intel video chipset and it's configured/works.

I have exactly the same problem
My system has an ATI X800XL which has 3D support running properly. Output of fglrxinfo: display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XL Generic OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8) There are NO errors whatsoever when I start Google Earth from the commandline. I already tried the "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.10" thing, but that only causes the following error: ./googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libm.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory My kernel-version = 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 |
Lucky for me, Google Earth is in the Portage tree. The version is 4.0.1693 (beta).
Make sure you do not have the firewall blocking outgoing and incomming requests. Also I think you need a broadband connection to download the data. Intel graphics is partially supported and slow. What I read, 3D only works in 16-bit color mode. borchen, you need the required libraries to be installed. If they are installed, setting up a symbolic could be used to work around the problem. |
Does your system meet the recomended specs?
You might try looking here: Google Earth Community: Viewing list of forums http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0 Runs just fine for me. Host/Kernel/OS "KanotixBox" running Linux 2.6.17.13-slh-smp-1 i686 [ Debian Sid/Kanotix ] CPU Info AMD Duron 64 KB cache flags( - ) clocked at [ 1800.255 MHz ] Videocard nVidia NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] X.Org 7.1.1 [ 1024x768 @75hz ] Network cards Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet, at port: e400 GLX Renderer GeForce FX 5500/AGP/SSE/3DNOW! | GLX Version 2.0.2 NVIDIA 87.74 |
I have it running quite will with Intel865 onboard graphics and Xorg driver. I think you need a recent kernel and the i915 kernel module for the intel graphics. Here's a (Debian specific) guide to other stuff you might need:
http://www.larsen-b.com/Article/231.html Check the log files in /var/log. Especially any that change when you try to start GE. Also look through /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if the graphics has initialised correctly. Also you could see if GE has put anything in its .googleearth config/cache directory that might give a clue. |

You have an internet connection over some mind of proxy server?
Since google earth doesn't know about that, it might take a lot of time, until it finally gets a timeout. |
