Gnome Taking over from XFCE (NOT NAUTILUS?!)
 
A bit of a tough one. I installed Xubuntu 9.10 the other day and its been running flawlessly. Everything looked good.. and then Gnome started taking control.

I've done a bit of googling but this can't be a nautilus issue, as I don't even have it installed on my system!

I also don't have the option of "Allow Xfce to manage desktop" in Xfce desktop settings; which struck me as a bit weird. (I have in previous versions!)

Any ideas would be really gratefully appreciated guys, cheers!

XFCE is using some gnome libraries.

What problems have you experienced ?

It's not clear what your actual problem is. Is something not running correctly?

Xubuntu uses GDM, which is the login manager, among other programs with GNOME dependencies. That is normal. I believe gnome-session and gnome-keyring are also pulled in as dependencies of GDM.

If you don't want so much Gnome to run you could change the login display manager to xdm.

aptitude install xdm
It's not as pretty or as fully featured as gdm. You can pretty it up a bit by changing /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup, uncommenting /usr/bin/xsetroot -solid rgb:8/8/8 and by experimenting with settings in /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources such as xlogin*greeting, xlogin*logoFileName, xlogin*face, xlogin*promptFace and xlogin*failFace.

Argh, Sorry guys - I should've been more clear.

The main problems are -
a) The User Interface on all my applications - this has become much more square, gray and ugly.
b) The Panel is displaying a different icon set completely - for volume, networking.. etc
c) I appear to have two sound managers, but I can see that from ps -A
d) I right click on the desktop and get the gnome style menu, not the Xfce programs menu..

Thanks for the feedback so far, I shall look into xdm for the login display manager - as I would quite like a lightweight option anyway.
