Gnome Panel Error
 

Hi,

I've recently started running dropline gnome 2.16 on Slack 11. Whenever the panel launches I get the following error:

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MiniCommanderApplet"

Can anyone help me diagnose this?

It sounds like you could have a really old install with a stale (depreciated) command-line applet that was depreciated in GNOME a long time ago. You probably should remove it. How old is your Slackware install, and what have you been using for GNOME previously? We generally discourage upgrades from old installs because many users have lots of stale stuff that makes problems hard to diagnose. I would suggest running this tool, which is something that one of our developers wrote to help diagnose these sorts of problems:

This is an upgraded Slack system, originally 10.2, but I have removed old packages, so the Slack part should be clean.I did have freerock installed, and still have some frg packages.

I've cleaned up most of the dependency issues from checkSetup, thanks. This did not fix the problem, but I just went ahead and clicked on the "Delete" from panel button, so that's okay.

Is there a way to create a custom applet for the gnome-panel?

Well, there isn't any way to "fix" the problem outside of rebuilding your applet. Custom applets need to be written like any other program. If you want a command-line launcher like the quickbar applet, you might want to try "deskbar". It has most of the same functionality and more, and comes with DLG by default.

I would highly suggest that you start with a clean Slackware 11.0 install with a clean Dropline 2.16.1 install, for the best experience. Lots of folks report problems as bugs that aren't really bugs, but it sounds as if the checkStuff script might have helped you find a few old things at least.
