gnome panel command line

I'm used to kde, now playing around with gnome, looking for an applet like a command line embedded in the panel so that I can start applications without having to click an icon. Like verve. Tried deskbar, but it shows up as an icon rather than an actual command line field in the panel. Is there any such program or should I try something else, like xfce?

Running gnome 2.22.3 on Ubuntu Hardy.

Not sure about Ubuntu specifically; I run Fedora 9, and if you right-click on the panel and do "Add to Panel", for me somewhere down the list there's "Command Line: Mini-Commander." Once on the panel, there's a circular button you use to launch programs, and also a small "history" button to see a list of all the commands you've typed so far.

I haven't used Ubunto in a while, so I'm not sure if this exists there, though.

Nope, doesn't exist, not in repositories. Apparently a command line applet existed in previous versions of Ubuntu but not Hardy.
