Angry Gnome or Xscreen don't start or .conf has an error

I am still kinda new to Linux, but have learned how to set up a Twinview for my two monitors. I also enabled Metisse after using Compiz Fusion for a while, then after rebooting, I logged in as my normal user, but nothing happened. Just the mouse and the default Mandriva background. I switched to the safe-mode terminal and logged in again and ran gdm, but got errors saying unable to acquire Gnome. I am unable to quote anything because I am writing this from Windows. I also tried xterm and that said something about the display manager not being available. Please help! I am slightly fed up with Mandriva and the many problems I seem to encounter and am considering changing to Mint or Peppermint Ice.
