GNOME not running correctly in Slack 11.0

Hi,
I installed GNOME 2.18 from sources on my Slack 11 machine. But when I try to run it, most apps exit with the following code

Code:
 alacarte
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/local/bin/alacarte", line 22, in <module>
    from Alacarte.MainWindow import MainWindow
  File "/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line 19, in <module>
    import gtk, gtk.glade, gmenu, gobject, gnomevfs, gnome.ui
ImportError: No module named gtk
I have gnome-python and py-gtk installed, still I'm getting this error. Please advise.
