GNOME: Nautilus -> how can I stop it popping up new windows for each child folder?

Hi

can't find this in the archives, so ...

I find that this is messy, especially when the entire path to the location viewed is conveniently located in the bottom left corner of the frame.

I'd just like it to navigate by moving into the folder I double click on.

Thanks

You can use browser windows. These will not pop up subfolders when they're double clicked.
Here's how:

  1. Go to System->Preferences->File Management
  2. Click the "Behaviour" tab
  3. Check "Always open in browser windows"

There you go!

ok ... I got it do to that ... for reference of others searching: that was (from within a window) Edit->Preferences->Behavior Tab

although I'd perhaps have prefered to have the windows thather than the browser, but such is life

thank you :-)

You can always hide the toolbars: from the View menu toggle Main Toolbar, Side Pane, Location Bar, Status Bar. Nautilus will remember these selections the next time you open it.

well, I can only see how to change
  • side pane
  • location bar
  • status bar

thanks for your suggestion :-)

for reference:

from my Mac using daze I tried holding down different keys when double clicking.

It seems that shift + double click opens a child and closes the parent. Much tidier that way :-)

Since the full path is available in the lower left (dropup menu) navigation backup the chain is facilitated (as is knowing where your window is located in the file system.

Thanks for all who offered suggestions (they were learning points for me too)
