GNOME: Mouse right + alt to resize Windows, How?
 

Hallo

I am new to linux. My friend showed me his linux. He had the small feature that I liked and never saw in windows.I have just a very simple question. I looked on the boards, but cannot get this in gnome:
GNOME: Mouse right + alt to resize Windows, How? Could someone help me to have same as my friend? I really like gnome, it's cool to configure it. gdesklets is great tool.

I know how to configure the keyboard (F1...F12 is of no interest), I just want ALT + MouseRightClick to resize

alt+mouse2 I have seen in Beryl ... but what do you mean by "resize"?

I'm using Gnome in F7 and when alt+rt click a context menu opens to choose "Minimize,unmaximize,move,resize etc". Same functions as Alt+F9, Alt+F5, Alt+F7 etc.

Ryptyde: In Ubuntu 7.04, I get the same menu with a rt-click sans <alt> on the title-bar. And I can drag the corners to resize. In beryl, the <alt>+rt-click can maximize or restore the focussed window.

... this is the point: it is not clear what is meant by "resize".

Try fluxbox or openbox:

frenchn00b: you have received many replies. However, you have not defined your terms: what do you mean by "resize"?

You see, what most folk understand by this is where you grab a corner and drag it out. Otherwise there is maximise, unmaximise, minimise, and restore. Or do you mean the fluxbox behavior?

with fluxbox while holding both mouse_right_click and alt. I just would like same with gnome : Mouse_right_click + alt hold both. Resize in this video is not made with grabing one edge and draging. all windows manager can do it by defautl.

OK.... it is the fluxbox behavior you want then.
I don't think I've ever seen gnome do this. However, now I know what you mean, I can look for a solution:

What happens in the vidio is that you press alt and drag the rt mouse button. Gnome does this with the center button.

BTW: you can assign key/button combinations to different things in gnome... it is just that the thing needs to exist for it to happen. And gnome/metacity is not supposed to be feature-rich.

The pre-compiled patch is unlikely to work for you... it's just too old. You'll have to use the long instructions. Basically, the patch just swaps the behavior of the right and center mouse buttons.

This cannot be mission critical. If it is sooo important to you, just install fluxbox.

Do you know maybe if there is a project to review gnome and add mouse features ?

I have heard of a project for Ubuntu which plans to add a gui to simplify mouse configuration. I have no idea how far it has got, but I understand that people are mostly concerned with configuring their (5-to-23-button) fancy mice.

I suspect, though, that complete customization of mouse actions is outside the scope of the gnome project. Since the feature you want is present (just keyed to a different action), this is the only general way of getting it. Your complaint is a bit like not liking the main menu being split in three.

If someone :jawa: knows hte project name, that would be cool.

Concerning this project, the problem is that the changes can only be made via .configur e ; make ; make install. and that ll be forever somehow then no customization.
