Gnome displays a black screen after login as user and root
 

hii,

I'm using Suse linux distribution 11 .

Actually the prob starts with when i got an error showing that the filesystem is corrupt.when i repaired it using fsck ....it shows exit point as fsck(2) dat means errors corrected but now when i log in as root or user i find a black screen..

I would try reinstalling X-server, Mesa, & video driver rpms and see if that catches it. I don't often suggest the m$ solution but it seems like a good idea this time. If you remove the X-server, it may offer you to remove all the 'dependencies' and that would do it for you. Then update.

The X server Reinstallation failed ..actually m lookin for some solution that doesnt require removal of X server untill it is really really required to remove it.

You might have to reformat your hard drive and reinstall SuSE, because a file system, by definition, is the data that formats your hard drive and allows you to store data on it. If it's corrupt, it will get even more corrupt if you keep writing to it, eventually leading you to an unbootable computer. Please reformat and reinstall before you end up at that stage (and PLEASE use ReiserFS or BTRFS instead of Ext4, as Ext4 cannot handle large files without getting corrupted).

Agree with Kenny. Proceed on the basis that your / filesystem is corrupt. If you never fsck'ed it, you may just have been stupid. If you were checking it, the drive could be dying.

yeah dats right i too agreed, well i already reinstalled it. i think;i must proceed wid some more R&D on the problem so if any of u get some kinda thing similar to it kindly update on this thread.
