Gnome disappearing panel and icons

The bottom panel (where the minimalised progammes go) disappeared a few days ago and a couple of day about the icons for system, application and place disappeared from the top panel. How do I get them back?

'gnome-panel' is the command to start the panel. Once you get the panel, right click it, select 'add to panel' and add whatever apps/applets you want.
