Gnome Desktop on Debian Lenny 5.0.3 64 bit
 

Can anyone help me customize the GUI file browsing. Unlike other Debian distros I cannot use a back and forward option which leaves me have to open a lot of subdirectories to get at files. I would be surprised if there was't a a way.

I intend to explore a few books on configuring Gnome. In the meantime I would appreciate some help to fast track my configuration.

What do you mean? Nautilus does have those features.
I think this should help-> Edit the preference from a window and check out the options in each tab. There should be one called "Always open in file browser" or sth. Select that and close the window and reopen.
