Get the latest gdm for ubuntu 8.10?

Is it possible to install the latest GDM in ubuntu 8.10, with all additional apps, like Rythmbox and so on. Something like apt-get install gdm-standart? Or i should compile by hand an each package?
And if yes, how should i delete my previous GDM, just "apt-get remove gdm*" ??
I know, that it is easier to install latest ubuntu, but i don't want to do in such way.

Unless someone has created a repository for backporting software to 8.10 (and I'm not aware of any such repository, and doubt there is one given that 8.10 is nearly two years old) you'll have to compile gnome from source.
