Gdm 3.0

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Des...ds/LoginScreen

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Des...rds/ScreenLock

According to these two live.gnome.org pages, GNOME Shell will include its very own built-in screen lock and login screen that in my opinion looks very nice. Looks like we won't need a GDM once GNOME 3 comes out!

"We" is all the members on these forums. And I was not asking a question but announcing what GDM 3.0 (or the GNOME 3 login screen) will look like.

Ok, here's a question regarding gdm3 (now that it's superseded GDM, apparently): is there no way to configure the default greeter? From googling and poking around in /etc/gdm3, it appears that there are zero configurable options besides automatically logging in as a given user.

I hadn't realized gdm3 was quite that bleeding edge; it's now the default in Debian testing, which seems a little rash.

Supposedly the login screen for GNOME 3 will be built into GNOME Shell, as will the Screen Lock, eliminating the need for GDM. That's what this thread is about. Try to click on my links before posting replies, ALL OF YOU.

The Shell may have a built in way to lock the screen for a user's session.
It says it may have the screen lock.

So what if you want to log on as Root? I need to edit a grub2 file for my boot order but can't just easily log on as root. Is there a workaround without having to do the su mode and type in the path and so on? It was easier to log on as root. I do like the look of gdm3 but if I can't choose to log on as root I'll go back to gdm.

Press ctrl-alt-f1. Log in as root. ctrl-alt-f7 gets you back to gdm login screen.

logging on as root with gdm3

Thanks arizonagroovejet "Press ctrl-alt-f1. Log in as root. ctrl-alt-f7 gets you back to gdm login screen." I haven't tried this yet with my Debian install I will and then I'll get back to you.
