FYI: sound problem on resume SOLVED (sort of)

For all who stumble over the same problem,to save a lot of time.

opensuse 13.1

After resume from suspend-to-ram the sound from internal speaker
( only sound in use at the time ) failed.

Tried a lot of things, wasted a lot of time, read a lot on the internet.
First thing that did "work" was reconfiguring soundcard after each suspend.
Not practical, and besides messed up the kde menu for unknown reasons; different style icons and no suspend possibilities. (to "fix" that; logout / login )

However a tip on the internet said that alsa could be muted.
That did *not* show in Kmix. ( nor in alsamixer IIRC ) ( also speaker itself did not show in Kmix ).
After adding "speaker" in the kmix channel list it indicated *un*muted after resume.

BUT: when you mute the speaker yourself with the mute button (not the slider) and then unmuting again, the speaker works as it should.

Tested with:
"speaker-test -c2 -l1 -twav"
to solve with commandline instead of Kmix:
"amixer set Speaker toggle"
or
"amixer set Speaker 0" followed by
"amixer set Speaker 50" (or any desired value)

Probably should go in a script at a strategic place.

(Funny thing is, external speakers did not have that problem.)

To me it still makes no sense but,
hope this helps someone.

Have you tried using alsactl?

If you set your volume levels and run
Code:
# alsactl store
It will save the settings and can be recalled with
Code:
# alsactl restore
I think some hibernate/suspend scripts on distributions will run the restore command automatically.

Thanx for your reply.

I did use
"alsactl restore"
before, but not your suggestion
"alsactl store"

Just tried that, did not work, also not with restore afterwards.
Muting and unmuting with alsamixer does work.
( That is done with the "m" key, not with the slider up/down keys ).

even more confusing ...

also tried
"alsactl nrestore" instead of "alsactl restore"
after resume.
The result was that toggle from the commandline with
"amixer set Speaker toggle" (twice)
did not work anymore.

What still did work was
"amixer set Speaker 0"
followed by
"amixer set Speaker 50"

Beats me, but the workaround works for me as in "close enough"
