font garbled in kde applications in karmic

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I recently upgraded to ubuntu karmic, and noticed that fonts are not rendering correctly in several kde(?) applications in xfce and gnome, including abiword, qsynth, and rosegarden. KDE as a desktop is not working at all -- windows show up completely fuzzy and staticky. I don't need to use kde, but I would like to use the applications.

When I say garbled I mean that each character shows up as a solid block of some shade of grey, or a single black line, or not at all. Maybe I need to install a font or change a locale, I'm just not sure how to do this.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the garbled text.

Thank you

A rough guess (and mind you that it's just a guess), I'd suggest that since Times New Roman is the chosen font, and it isn't rendering properly, you may have a problem with the microsoft ttf font installation. Try re-installing those fonts to see it that cures the problem

I can't tell you how to do it since I don't use xfce.

Hello,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I tried re-installing the microsoft fonts using apt. Didn't work. Also, ALL fonts don't work, not just times.

I thought it might be a compositing problem in kde, but not only did I turn off compositing everywhere I could find it, I went so far as to uninstall compiz and compizfusion.

Still no joy.

Hi,

Still no luck here. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I'm starting to really miss applications like Rosegarden. If it helps at all, I've tried the gui qt3 configuration editor, and the text in the editor itself is garbled but the previews of the fonts chosen are not. In the gui qt4 settings editor everything appears perfectly. So if anyone knows the difference between the qt3 config editor and the qt4 settings editor, that might greatly help me solve this problem.

Thanks!

What version of xorg-server do you have? - I'm thinking it may be something a little funky about xorg, (on some systems).
I have a machine that I've recently upgraded. It had xorg-server-1.4.2 and all was fine. It's now got xorg-server-1.6.3 and things are a bit skewed. (Using KDE here.)
But, I have 1.6.3 on another machine and it seems fine .... so I don't know for sure.

1.6.4-2 I think. Any other ideas? Anyone? Please?? I'm now mostly using Debian (I dual boot) -- this reminds me why I resisted trying Ubuntu in the first place! If I can't solve this problem soon I'm going to give up on it entirely.
