Flexible desktop environment for 2 monitors
 

Hi all,
for many years I have been happy with fvwm. However, I cannot find a nice way to dynamically add second monitor (of different resolution) on a laptop. I would like to have:
* multiple desktops (I am using 4x2 currently)
* both monitors can be moved independently across the virtual screen (is it possible?)
* or -- run different X11 screens on different monitors.
* window titlebar on side (or missing at all) to spare the vertical pixels.

Any ideas? Any better suggestions how to configure dual monitors in a productive way?

Ill kick in with my setup for what its worth.
XFCE on Debian Squeeze, triple head. 2x19" 1x24".

I run 4 desktops, through compiz as part of the desktop cube.

XFCE doesn't handle multi monitor wall papers very well though, there is a solution for XFCE 4.8, but i havent got it working with 4.6, the workaround is to hack a large image apart into the correct sized images, and assign them to each monitor independently.

To your points.
XFCE handles this by default, and can be customised easily.
Im not sure what you mean by this, but using the xorg configuration, or the setup tool for your VGA card, you can set the location of the monitors, ie: 1 left of 2, or above/below, etc..
Again, this can be setup via xorg.conf.
xfce has some funky looking WM themes. But they can be customised to pretty well look however you like, with fonts, sizes, etc all being adjustable.

I used to be a Gnome user, until that whole Gnome3 thing, which is when i changed to XFCE, i also disable all panels, and just run one, hidden dock. Window navigation is handled by keyboard shortcuts with compiz.

I set up dual monitors at work. Both are stationary, of similar size, and always there. This is set up as two separate X screens, and seems to work like a charm with fvwm, but there is also nothing dynamic there, so I can play around with xorg.conf.

I experimented with xfce, but for some reason, the monitor setup tool (grandr) is messed up and I cannot really select the placement of the monitors etc. This is probably an ubuntu 11.10 quirk on my computer. Have to look more. Would really love to have all the config options just there -- be able to select one or another or both monitors, and swap sides as well.
