flashplayer in firefox

My Linux is fc5 2.6.18.2, firefox is 1.5.0.8, and flashplayer is 7.0.68.

I've run the flashplayer installer from the download, and I've followed the instructions on mozdev (they don't do the same thing) and neither one runs in firefox - about:plugins shows me java, helix, openoffice, but no flashplayer.

I tried moving the .xpt and .so by hand to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, to ../firefox-1.5.0.8/plugins, and to the respective ../components and ../plugins directories, and nothing seems to work.

Does anybody have a clue how flashplayer works?

Thanks for any advice.

not sure if this will help..
but..
all my mozilla plugins are in /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins

and in my home dir /.mozilla/plugins

Thanks, but I don't even have /usr/lib/nsbrowser. I'm fiddling with the home dir now to see if that works.

It's amazing how many different directory structures firefox seems to have on different machines, and how many different ways plugin files populate them. I'd like to see a writeup of the rules the browser follows at startup, and why some libs want to be links, and others real files.

Flash 9

Have you tried installing flash 9 from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer9.html
there is a readme.txt file included that explains how to install it.

Good luck

At last.

The flash-9 .so works, or at least it shows up in about:plugins when I copy it into /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.8/plugins. I haven't tested it yet, but if it won't run any flash media, well, that's another level of support, isn't it?

No idea why, but none of the -7 instructions got ff to recognize 'em.

Thanks to all for your replies.
