Firefox v9.0.1 on Ubuntu v10.04 "ever ready bunny" keeps running
 

Can anyone (1) explain, and (2) help resolve my troubles with Firefox browser v9.0.1 on Ubuntu v10.04?

Too many web sites have content that runs, and ... runs, and ... runs resulting in very high CPU utilization and thus sluggish response to whatever I try to do. I can visit various pages, right-click, and stop the movie or similar but I can never seem to end the bunny drum beat [Sorry, battery company]. The CPU-FIRE tray applet just keeps the fires burning brightly.

I went looking for some sort of "run once" add-on for Firefox. Before you scold me, YES! I did look over in the Firefox forums and other postings. I could not discover the right search terms to find anything useful. Thus I come here to my LQ friends that always provide help and solace.

As far as explanation: basically, it is just content running in the multiple tabs you have open; JavaScript, Java, and Flash. Firefox has attacked this problem somewhat by automatically raising the JavaScript timeout values on non-focused tabs (i.e., JavaScripts are throttled down in tabs you aren't working in). So you are better off in Firefox than in other browsers. But anyway, here are a few approaches:

* Close tabs you aren't using. There is a cool add-on I use called "AutoClose Tabs" which automatically closes tabs after they haven't been used for a set period of time (you pick how long that is). Also allows you to prevent a tab from automatically closing by simply double-clicking on it.

* NoScript. The NoScript add-on allows you to automatically block JavaScript from running on all sites, or from certain sources. So, for example, you can block all advertisements from Google Adsense or Adbright. That isn't very good for the Internet economy, but it would save your CPU a lot of work.

* Flashblock add-on. Hopefully you don't have Flash installed, but if you do, this would block the Flash ads.

I don't object to the adverts per se, I'm willing for any thing to "run once" then quit.
It is the forever-loop ... especially when a page as more than one ... that gets my goat
(along with the rest of the barn-yard animals) in a huff.

FlashBlock seems to have calmed the waters enough that I can get work done again.
