I have a 1680x1050 monitor and run both Linux and Windows at that resolution. But in Firefox for Windows I have bunch of bookmarks in the Navigation tool bar that all show up fine. But in Linux those same exact links are too wide for the screen to display so it uses the >> to pop up a window to show what isn't listed.
Not really sure why the Linux one has problems displaying them all when Windows doesn't (all are exactly the same, I use Foxmarks which keeps all of my book marks sync'ed identically).
Any ideas? Perhaps the Font in Linux is by default larger then what is in Windows?
Probably is - or then there is something else in the window elements' size that depends on the underlying thing. I wouldn't worry about it - if you have enough bookmarks to fill a screen that big (22" widescreen?), you have too many of them in sight at once
Yes it is a 22" Widescreen, and no you can never have enough bookmarks up there.
I put them up there because I visit them every single day in exactly that order. A bit annoying to have to use the >> and menu system but I don't use Linux daily so not that big of a deal.
There are some *hidden* preferences that you can set. They are not in the Edit - Preferences dialogue. You can use those hidded preferences to set menu/toolbar fonts.
probably you can use folder to arrange your bookmarks. I have alot of website(RSS) to visit everyday. I make my life easier via make the text of bookmark become shorter, organize them into folder.
Regarding windows/Linux behave in difference way I agree with pixellany, font problem.
There is a very simple explanation for the difference--it's just the font being used. Ubuntu's default application font is Deja Vu Sans 9 (named simply "sans" in the preferences; sans is softlinked to Deja Vu sans). This font is a bit rounder and wider than Windows's default font Tahoma 8. Therefore, the same text in Ubuntu will be a bit wider than in Windows, using the default fonts.
But the solution is simple--just change the font to a smaller size and/or a narrower font. In Ubuntu, it's under Preferences->Appearance. I think that after you make the change, you have to close and restart Firefox for it to use the new font settings.
