Fedora 8 - Black screen after boot - "Loading" cursor displaying :(

Hi

I've recently installed FC8 and followed a guide on howtoforge.com showing the "Perfect LAMP" installation with ISPConfig for Fedora. After installing that along with SAMBA (another tutorial on their site), my desktop is gone.

I boot the system, it shows the Fedora loading thing where you can hit enter/space to view all the boot processes. It gets to the end, and the screen goes black and just has the loading cursor (the one with the blue spinning bit round the mouse)

I've tried hitting buttons and all sorts, but its no good...I cant even get the login screen.

I can SSH in remotely however.

Anyone got any ideas whats happened here? I left it on for a good 10 hours yesterday to see if it eventually went past the black screen but it didn't.

From Shell and web, the server is working fine....its just the desktop/gui :(

Help!

Thanks

Rick

Start to runlevel 3 (by ssh or in the grub bootloaded by pression "e" and adding "3" to the kernel line and pressing enter). Then you may login to the text console. I suppose that you have some wrong display configuration and you should try to reconfigure (system-config-display). Also have a look in the log messages for further debugging.

Thanks for your reply Brianmcgee. I did as you said, after using the system-config-display command and checking everything was correct, once I hit the "ok" button, the console output this message:

Quote:

Window manager warning: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on display ':17.0'.
I dont have a clue what it means though :s

It could simply be that you are still at runlevel 3. After that setup / confirm, you should still be at a terminal. As root, simply try switching to runlevel 5, 'init 5' and see if you get the same.

Another thing I would do, is restart, let it goto that same black screen, switch to a console (<ctrl><alt><f1>). Login and check what is running via top, or ps.

Might be someting obvious. Also turn off things on startup via checkconfig or <i> interactive mode.

last is always the logs, anything jumping out in the message file?
