Fedora 20: Unable to log into most desktop envs. after yum update

Hi everyone,

I am unable to log into most DEs I have after I made a yum update yesterday. What happens when I enter my username and password and try to start an XFCE (or Cinnamon) session is that it validates my password and username but takes me back to the home screen. Currently, I am able to only login into KDE and GNOME.

The first thing I did was delete the ~/.Xauthority file. That did not work, so I subsequently checked the .xsession-errors upon failing to log into XFCE/Cinnamon the next, but the file was empty. I am currently logged into GNOME as the same user.

Can you please tell me what is wrong?

Thanks.

Try ctrl+alt+f1 and login as yourself.
Code:
mv ~/.config ~/.config.org ; exit
ctrl+alt+f7 and login.

I tried as you suggested but unfortunately the problem remains.

The DEs not working are: Cinnamon, Mate, OpenBox, XFCE, GNOME (apologies for mentioning that I was using GNOME the previous time. I logged in using a DE entitled 'Custom', which more-or-less looks like GNOME).

DEs that I am able to access are: KDE and Custom (which, as I mentioned, seems to be GNOME).

OK.
Is /home/<user> a legacy from some former install, by any chance?

Can you create a new user on the system and test the issue(s) against the new user and report the results please?

<user> was something I created on a fresh install of Fedora 20 about a couple of months ago.

I created a new user to test if it has the same problems. Seems like it does, just like before , I am able to access only KDE using <new_user>.

I forgot to mention that the reson why I updated yum in the first place way as a precursor to installing a video camera drive. I can't tell how they are connected, but I thought it could be of some help.

I too, am experiencing this, on a fedora 20 install with kde, openbox and e17.5.
Only kde works, others cycle back to kdm greeter. Searched everywhere for err msgs. None found.

I have the same situation on another machine with korora.

If I create ~/.xinitrc, and edit to enter: exec enlightenment_start
Then run
startx
from the terminal, e17 comes up just fine.
I have removed and reinstalled kdm, with no change.

Fixed on my systems. Culprit is kdm. As stated earlier, reinstalling kdm made no difference.
I replaced it with lightdm, and can now boot into any desktop selected.
Procedure I used is listed below. Log into a tty terminal as root. I used ctrl/alt/F4.
<typed in commands:>
#systemctl stop kdm.service
#systemctl disable kdm.service
#yum remove kdm
#yum install lightdm
#systemctl enable lightdm.service
#systemctl start lightdm.service

This worked as typed for korora, but fedora had another issue.
Two versions of kde-settings-kdm were installed, and I had to use:
#rpm -e --noscripts kde-settings-kdm-19-23.fc19
to get rid of the old fc19 version, yum could not uninstall it.
see bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=980899

I may try kdm after a couple of versions, but for now I can access all desktops.

I tried the sequesce of commands out. What I now have is a version of non-flashy Cinnamon. When I get to the fedora menu, I do not find any options - Cinnamon is by default and there is only Cinnamon. Are there any easy fixes to have access to the rest?

Lol, interestingly, upon rebooting, I find all the options on the Fedora home screen and KDE is still the only DE I am able to use. I suppose there is something else with the KDM that is causing this. For now, I will have to stick to KDE.

Hi everyone, I noticed recently that all the DEs are currently working. I believe this is due to a yum update I made a couple of weeks ago, because I did not change anything before or after that. Ultimately, I am not sure what exactly to point my finger at.
