FEDORA 16 : can't access as root

Hello

I have installed FEDORA 16 today

With GUI interface, i can access my directory and can also use the command SU - to get to "root"

However, for some reasons, i can't see the directories /lib, /usr, etc/, /home, when i'm using the terminal

If i use the GUI files explorer, i can see into FILE SYSTEM the directories i'm refering to, but i don't have permission to edit any ( as in GUI, im logged as me, and not root )

DO you know what i have done wrong?

Thanks for any helps

Daniel

well the first thing
when you use " su -" the location in the terminal MOVES
you are no longer in the last folder .You are in /root .

so to go to / or /etc or /share you need to go up one level

Code:
ls
cd ../
ls
see the difference
try this
install the gnome plugin " nautilus-open-terminal"
it is called something like that
Code:
su -
yum search terminal
then in your normal user home folder r-click and select " open terminal here"

then use "su -"
you will see that the location HAS changed

also it you are not used to a terminal you can install MC ( midnight commander)
it is a ascii text based gui
Code:
su -
yum install mc
then to run mc
just type mc into the terminal

Thanks

Hey,

Thanks for the explanation, very helpful

While you are there, what Linux-Unix distro are you recommanding for Unix Server, that will host WEB, application server and database.
it is a personal webserver for me, to pratice and store my java

I heard that FEDORA was good, but not sure what to do now.

Thanks

Daniel

fedora is one of the worst choices for a server

it has only 13 month life cycle and a new version comes out EVERY 6 months
a FULL clean reinstall is recommended for upgrading to the next version

so unless YOU WANT TO reinstall a operating system EVERY 6 months fedora is not a good choice

in the red hat type family a GOOD choice would be

RHEL 6 -- NOT FREE ( 5 to 7 year life cycle)
CentOS6 -- rebuild from the rhel source - FREE
ScientificLinux6 -- rebuild from the rhel source - FREE
or if for an office that uses windows AD, then SELS ( SUSE Enterprise Server) -- NOT FREE
